 Arbor Gallery Summer Workshop course descriptions & details:

The Graphic Novel - July 13 to Aug 24 - Tuesdays 6:30 - 8:30pm
FREE COURSE FOR TEENS. An introductory course guiding students through the steps of making their own comics or graphic novels for display on the Internet or publication in books. Students will learn writing and drawing techniques and  create their own short graphic stories during the course. Free to participate but you must register to reserve your place. Taught by comic artist, Michel Levesque, BFA

Drawing and Painting - Wed July 14, 10am - 2pm
Introductions to drawing and painting techniques. A course for both beginner and intermediate students. Students will explore several techniques in drawing such as gesture, contour and free hand and work on techniques in painting. Students will improve on their present skills and learn how to use various drawing and painting materials. Taught by Gisele Paquette, artist and Visual Art Specialist for the Upper Canada District School Board.Course Cost: $50, Supplies are available for purchase from the teacher.

Printmaking - the art of woodcut - Wed Aug 4, 10am - 2pm
Students will learn how to cut their own wood printing blocks and how to print their images using printmaking inks. Rudiments and techniques of woodcut will be covered, as well as elements and principles of design that are essential to the medium. Taught by Gisele Paquette artist and Visual Art Specialist for the Upper Canada District School Board. Course Cost: $50, Supplies are available for purchase from the teacher.

Mixed Media - Wed Aug 11, 10am - 2pm
Exploration of various art techniques: clay, sculpture, collage, paint, and printmaking. This course will familiarize students with various forms of art media. Participants will explore the elements and principles of design and learn how to communicate their ideas, using various materials as source of inspiration.Taught by Gisele Paquette artist and Visual Art Specialist for the Upper Canada District School Board.Course Cost: $50, Supplies are available for purchase from the teacher.

Basic Computer and Imaging Skills - Thursdays: July 15 - 29 , 6:30 - 8:30pm
This course will help you to be more at ease when using your computer. The course also includes Q & A sessions with the teacher so you can learn how to get your computer to work for you. You'll also learn: Where your files end up and how to find them. How to transfer images from your camera, resize and crop them to send through email.  Learn tips on searching the internet and how to find what you’re looking for.  Learn when to click "download" and when it's best not to. Taught by Ben Martin, freelance graphic and web designer. Course Cost: $75, Students must have their own laptop.

Cyanotype - Sat July 17, 10am - 1pm (Outdoor course, rain date: Sun July 18)
Cyanotype images are distinctly bright blue in colour and can only be made outside, in the sun. Invented in 1842, cyanotype is still in use by artists today. Objects, such as leaves or lace, are placed on specially coated paper and the results are quite beautiful. Preparing negatives from your photos and working with drawn images will also be covered. Taught by Jessica Sarrazin, AOCAD, MFA. Course Cost: $40. Students will need to purchase a pack of twelve 5"x7" cyanotype sheets for $14.

Framing 101 - Saturday July 24, 10am - 1pm
Everything you need to know to frame artworks. This workshop covers how to cut your own mats and how to select and work with existing frames. Instruction takes place on a professional quality mat cutter. You'll also learn about hardware and archival supplies. Learn techniques for framing all kinds of art! aught By Jessica Sarrazin, AOCAD, MFA.Course Cost: $40. Students need to bring a sheet of mat board to practice your cuts.

Land / Earth Art - Saturday July 31, 10am - 2pm (Outdoor course, rain date TBA)
What is Land or Earth Art? Art that is made outside, frequently using natural materials or other objects found outdoors. It often has an eco-ethic and is meant to be impermanent and to decompose naturally over time. This course is both an introduction to the history of Land Art and a hands-on session where participants will make pieces that will remain on the gallery grounds for the summer. Taught by Emily Sova, BFA, BEd Course Cost: $50

Framing Artworks 101
Taught by: Jessica Sarrazin, MFA, AOCAD
This workshop in framing artworks includes instruction on the gallery's brand-new, professional quality mat cutter! You'll also learn about wood and metal frames, hardware and archival supplies. Learn techniques for framing all kinds of art!
Course Time: TBA scheduled according to student demand, 3 hours
Course Dates: TBA (1 session)
Course Cost: $40. For students who want to be able to use the mat cutter after the course there is a $60 framing-lab annual user fee. You must take the framing workshop to use the framing lab.
Materials: Bring one sheet of mat board to practice your cuts.

Leather Workshop 1:
Make your own one-of-a-kind belt
Taught by: Lynn MacNab
Lynn MacNab of Oshonto Boots, will teach students how to design, carve, color and finish their own unique leather belt. Students will learn the principles of stamping, carving and designing and be able to practice carving on several pieces of leather. Working with leather is a very satisfying and rewarding experience and the piece you make can be both beautiful and long wearing.
Course Time: TBA scheduled according to student demand, 2 hour sessions
Course Dates: TBA - (This course is a 3 Session Workshop)
Course Cost: $80 for 3-session workshop
Materials: A materials fee of $30 for leather and supplies for your belt will be charged.

Leather Workshop 2:
Make you own one-of-a-kind Book Cover  or Photograph Album
Taught by: Lynn MacNab
Lynn MacNab of Oshonto Boots, will teach students how to design, carve, colour and finish their own unique leather book cover or photo album. Students will learn the principles of stamping, carving and designing and be able to practice carving on several pieces of leather. Working with leather is a very satisfying and rewarding experience and the piece you make can be both beautiful and long wearing.
Course Time: TBA scheduled according to student demand, 2-hour sessions
Course Dates: TBA - (This course is a 4 Session Workshop.)
Course Cost: $105 for 4-session workshop
Materials: A materials fee for leather and supplies will be charged. The fee is $20-$40 depending on the size of book you choose to make.

About Our Teachers
 
Lynn MacNab worked as a saddle maker in Alberta and made boots at Upper Canada Village before starting her own boot making business(Oshonto Boots), She has been featured on Regional Contact and has made boots for many famous people, including former Prime Minister Jean Chrètien.
 
Ben Martin graduated from Seneca college after completing his studies in Digital Media Technical Production. He then started working for Astral Media (The Movie Network, Family Channel, etc) as a graphic designer doing print and web graphics. Later he moved on to work with Tribute magazine and Amp’d Mobile. With 15 years of Photoshop experience, he recently moved back to Vankleek Hill and is currently freelancing, working mostly with Ad Agencies. After helping his coworkers solve their Photoshop problems for years, he finally decided teach a course on it.
 
Gisele Paquette has been teaching in the field of the arts for over 20 years. She is a graduate of Mc Gill University in Art Education and Dance. She also studied at Queen's University where she received her specialist qualifications with honors in Visual Arts. In her own artistic practice, she specializes in printmaking: specifically the art of woodcut. Her family is well known for their artistry in decoy making and their works have been published as well as part of collections and museums around North America. Gisele is presently teaching Visual Art at the Senior level for the Upper Canada District School Board.

Jessica Sarrazin received her Master of Fine Arts degree in 2005 and has been exhibiting professionally since 1998. She works in photography, video, sculpture & installation as well as drawing and painting. She has enjoyed teaching various arts for over 15 years and is currently the curator at Arbor Gallery.
